“I’m heading out Marco!”
“Be careful Sarah. Call me when you’ve found him. Be safe.”
“Ha! I wish some sort of terrorist thing would mess with this De La Cruz! And I will!”
She shut the door behind her and pulled her jacket around her tighter. Wearing shorts, a beige blouse, and a black messenger hat to fit her black curls inside. Her skin was a soft brown and her eyes large black pools of curiosity and attitude. Taking the stairs from their third-floor apartment she stomped her way to the bottom.
Pushing through the front door she shielded her eyes from the bright light of the sun finally pushing through the clouds above. She checked her phone, making sure she had the place that Jack had told her was his new job highlighted.
There weren’t a lot of people on the street at the moment, most probably scared out of their minds about whatever was going on. And rightfully so. She wanted to go meet Jack at his job and walk him back personally but that didn’t mean she wasn’t also on edge about this whole situation.
The train was out of the question but thankfully walking wasn’t the hardest thing to do. Walking straight down the street from their apartment she walked to the train station first and like she thought it was cordoned off by police and yellow tape. As she walked she could hear some of the officers talking.
“What kind of shit is going on.”
“Really think it was a terrorist attack?”
“On that train this early in the morning? No way,” he shook his head. “Especially not on a Monday.”
“Come on Monday is the last day to cause some trouble.”
They laughed and Sarah couldn’t blame them. Monday was definitely not the day to cause some sort of action of domestic or international terrorism. That was definitely a Thursday kind of activity in her book. Despite the station being locked down she still followed the tracks going down the side walk and walking with it. It would take a bit longer but it would work.
She got about halfway there when her phone started ringing and buzzing in her pocket. She fished it out of her back pocket because her front pockets couldn’t accommodate a dollar let alone her cell phone. Rotating it she checked the caller ID and then her face lit up and she smiled.
“Hey Auntie what’s up?”
“Really little girl? Something crazy happens in the city and you don’t call me to let me know you three are safe?”
“Hey come on I was just going to check on Jack. Marco got off him job this morning before all the crazy happened and Jack got to work safely as well. But he told me that he’s getting let out early so I’m escorting him back home safely.”
“Oh good. You know that boy can’t handle this kinda of situation without you behind him.”
Sarah giggled and nodded. “I’m glad you understand that auntie. What about you? Are you okay. People aren’t getting crazy just because something weird happened right?”
“You know how people get. They think one major catastrophe happens and they can cause trouble for honest folk. But they know better than to try that shit near my house,” she said with a snort.Weirdness aside how are you doing? You guys did just move in together.”
“I think we’re fine. We have a good rhythm between the three of us. Jack works mornings now, Marco at night and I kinda keep everything functioning at home.”
“What you’re going to be a stay at home wife? Something about that feels not like you.”
“I’m still looking for a job but for right now it’s how we’re making it work,” she said and frowned. “But I do want to find something. If I could get a gig working from home that would be perfect.”
“Sounds about right. Well I won’t keep you. Just wanted to make sure you were okay and all. Say hi to Jack and Marco for me. Stay safe now. I don’t want grand children yet.”
“Augh why must you always end your calls with that?”
“Love you Sarah!”
“Love you too auntie.”
Rounding a corner, she saw the taller buildings and found the business distract oncoming. Buildings far taller than she could even imagine and the quality of dress started to accelerate rather quickly from t-shirts and jeans to button ups and then into full on suits, ties and briefcases. It was actually incredible how fast she felt out of place by everything around her.
And she could imagine how Jack felt coming to work that day.
Walking to the address of the building she started walking up the massive steps to the glass entrance way. It was some sort of university building but not one she was familiar with. A business school that was relatively new. She debated on going in and going through security but something in her told her to wait it out in front of the place.
“Is this all that you needed to move?”
She perked up hearing the gentle gruffness from around the corner of the building. Standing up she watched as a series of boxes with apparently legs attached struggled their way forward. A smaller old woman trailed behind him pointing ahead with her key fob. One of the many cars on the street chirped to life and the trunk popped open.
The boxes walked over to it and then set them down gently and leaned on the top of them. Wiping his forehead Jack let out a breath and then laughed. He had low cut black hair, dark skin that the sun had generously loved on, a mild beard and mustache that he was grooming, and a tall lanky frame. He was wearing a pair of old jeans and a slightly ripped shirt.
“Thank you young man,” the old woman said after he finally finished loading the last of the boxes into the back of her car.
“It’s no problem. Happy to help.”
Once the woman was in her car and pulled off, Jack turned around staring at the front of the university and watched as Sarah waved a napkin in his general direction beaming at him. He did a slight bow, before stumbling forward but catching himself at the last minute.
“Here to escort me home?”
“Sure am. Shall we go?”
