Cal held his sword with one hand, tracing the flat with other and pointed it at the Sarah and Kathryn. Seth was at his back, both hands up and glowing. Marco was sitting on the ground a hand at his chin watching them but he was powered down. “Remember guys. Try not to hurt each other too much. We’re just getting a feel for what we all can do.”
“Tell your girlfriend that!” Seth shouted back. “That shit hurts.”
“Sorry Seth. I’ll try to tone it down for you,” she said sarcastically flipping an axe around quickly.
Marco smiled and leaned forward. They’d been at this for a few hours now, swapping partners every half hour or so and taking turns having a breather. They had synergy but they weren’t a team. Not yet. Cal and Kathryn were fine because they were friends. The same for him and Sarah. But Seth just rolled with the hand he was dealt.
He was still trying to piece together how they all worked as a unit of five based off that information but they still didn’t know what Cal could do. He knew that Cal had more going on behind the scenes but neither he nor Cal had figured it out.
Cal and Seth fanned out keeping their weapons ready. Sarah and Kathryn on the other hand stayed closed to each other. Sarah was confident with her axes but Kathryn was still getting used to the staff. She had it separated, one piece under her arm, another against her chest and the last in her hand.
“Got any suggestions?” Kathryn asked.
Sarah glanced at her, “You’re asking me?”
“I think you do the whole attack thing better,” she replied.
Watching the two of them she glanced at Seth’s glowing hands and Cal’s sword. “Seth’s going to run in. Cal probably wants to try and get in whenever he finds some sort of opening. Hold Seth off and ruin Cal’s chances of making something happen.”
“I like it,” Kathryn said having never took her eyes off Seth.
Seth raised his fist slowly and took a breath then stepped back and punched the air twice. Kathryn rotated her staff quickly locking the pieces together like a triangle. She stepped forward catching one of the blasts with her shield and threw it aside into the other. The collided and exploded against the ground. Seth took his moment and darted in through the light.
Kathryn reassembled her staff blocking his first punch and ducked under the next. His knee came forward and she lowered her staff forcing his foot back into the ground. The staff snapped in half but she spun both sticks around ready to ward off his next punch. Instead Seth stepped forward hitting his head against her own.
“Shit Seth,” she mumbled and he just laughed as his fist glowed to life again.
“Tag out,” Sarah grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back as she jumped over. He blocked one axe the electricity glancing off his shield but the second axe came at his side. He tried to block it but a jab to the head by Kathryn’s staff and he took the axe to the hip.
Letting out a shout he slid across the ground swearing up a storm as he and his suit spasmed through the electricity. “Hurry up and do your thing!”
“Already doing it,” Cal said as he held his sword at Kathryn’s throat. Sarah was staring at another sword aimed at her chest stunned. Both women stared at the sudden pair of Cals in front of them. Seth pulled himself to his feet and whistled. Even Marco had jumped to his feet staring at them.
“I think I’m the handsome one between the two of us,” the one in front of Kathryn said.
“How are you doing this?” Sarah asked. As she asked both of them shimmered and then one disappeared.
Cal stepped forward resting the sword at his hip and raised his eyebrow. “So apparently I can make clones. Not real ones but like,” he dragged his hand across the sword and another clone appeared folding its arms.
“How’d you figure that out?” Kathryn asked and poked the clone but her hand went through it. She pushed her hand through the head of it entirely. “Weird.”
He shrugged, “I asked the stone.”
“You asked it?” Sarah repeated.
“Yeah. I asked it if it had any other tricks up its sleeve. And then I just knew how to do it. I don’t know how to do anything with it but I know how to make it. Maybe I can make more than one.” He sounded excited.
“Well I’m glad you figured it out after I took another two hits,” Seth let his suit fade away and rubbed his forehead and side. “We done with this team building shit?”
“Yeah. That’s really good for today,” Marco walked over to them and one by one they let their suits fade away and sigh. “I have a few ideas. More than a few actually.”
“I’m assuming those ideas are good right?” Kathryn asked. “I hope so. Made me get up at the crack of dawn.”
“I think so,” he smiled at her. “And sorry about that.”
“Apologize to me too handsome,” Sarah added and rubbed Marco’s back slowly. “And I’m starving.”
“I second that,” Cal added and reached into his pocket pulling out his phone. Scrolling through it slowly a smile broke out on his face as he started texting.
“So you think we got a fighting chance the next time the Taq-Law send an army our way?” Seth asked meaning to be sarcastic but there was some reservation in his voice.
“Honestly I don’t know,” Marco said frowning and looking toward the ground. “But for all our sakes I’m going to try.” His stomach growled and he laughed as Sarah poked it.
Cal put his phone in his pocket and raised his hands, “Team I may have a solution to our ails.”
“What’s that?” Seth asked cracking his neck slowly.
“Ben text me that he was up. Said he was going to be able to make breakfast for me when I get back. So I asked if he could make breakfast for six. He likes a challenge so he accepted. If you guys are good with omelets and the best coffee you’ve ever had, you can come by our place.”
Sarah looked at each of them one by one and said, “I think I speak for us all when I say, hell yeah.”
