Enhance: Chapter 3

“Trick or treat!” The resounding chorus of the familiar jingle followed after every doorbell. Colorful ghouls, ghost, and monsters were running around the city streets. There were parents, elder siblings and a small handful of police patrolling the streets as well.  It was Halloween but there like always there was the fear of something bad happening that night.

The apartment that the kids were standing in front of was of dark grey concrete. The door was decorated with fake and real cobwebs. The usual iron metal gate that kept out non-residents was spooky enough that it was left bare. That and normally the thing was rusted over.

The door opened and a skeleton answered the door. Well a costume skeleton. She wasn’t a big proponent of the Halloween spirit around here but she wasn’t going to squash it for the kids.  “Alright now what do we have here?” She said in her best creaky voice. Under her arm was a bag of Hershey’s finest chocolates.

“We’ve got a space man.” She dropped a few of the mini chocolates into the waiting pumpkin head container. “A cow girl.” She repeated the process and frowned. “And what might you be? A skeletal warrior?”

The boy lifted his mask and smiled, waving his sword at her. “I’m going to be in the skeleton war and beat back the fuck boys!”

She just blinked thrown off her rhythm. Giving him his candy she smiled and wiggled her fingers at them. “Have fun kids. Go raise some hell!”

“Thanks ma’am!” They shouted and ran away. Folding her arms she laughed lightly. This felt normal. She liked doing small things like this every once and awhile. It was a nice distraction from her day to day. Or rather night to night.

Leaning against the doorframe she watched as more kids went running past, their guardians trailing behind them. The sun was setting and the clouds were already rolling in. At best the night was going to be a cold and dark one. She’d have to dress warm tonight.

As a chill breeze blew over, she closed the door and dropped the bag onto the table near the door. In the apartment it was lightly encouraged to hand out candy to kids that came through. She contemplated waiting for another round when her pocket started to vibrate furiously. Reaching into her pocket she saw the caller ID and a smile formed on her face. Answering the phone, she opened her mouth to speak but they beat her too it.

“Come up, we’re getting ready.” The deeper female voice said were the words she’d been waiting all night to hear.

Going to the elevator she took it all the way to the top floor. The penthouse to be exact. Leaning against the wall of the elevator she didn’t have music to enjoy. Instead she had the sounds of the machinery grunting at her. The creeks of metal, the grinding of gears and the hum of the engine. Soothing.

Closing her eyes, she was going over the plan in her head. It was supposed to be something simple but she wanted to throw in something exciting. Then there was Phase who she knew would just want to be as quick as possible. Though Yumi would have her way to some degree. She always did.

To think four months ago they were just experiments in the lab.

There was a ding and the elevator door opened. The penthouse apartment was huge, the living room extravagant with three couches and two connected 4k TVs in the center of the room. They could play two separate shows or on movie night it was like a miniature theatre.  She walked forward and glanced around. The kitchen was empty; she knew that much. Which meant they were either in their rooms or they were in the office.

“What the hell are you wearing Feint?” She turned around upon entering her bedroom around the corner.

Looking down at her simple and cheap costume she shrugged, the mask still in place.  Loose fitting black shirt and pants, with her skeleton drawn where they should be. “I’m a skeleton. Spooky and all that stuff.”

“You could try harder. Like me.”

Yumi had let her hair grow longer. The extra of sunlight had helped darken her skin a lot. She was wearing a witch’s black robes that she had hiked up to her hip on the right. Though she still had black leggings on she had attempted to be festive. She valued the ability to move around. The robe was likewise rolled back from her arms to her elbows. She even had the wide brimmed hat on.

“Take that off and get geared up.” Feint said, pointed toward the bathroom. “Our shiny new equipment is out there and waiting for us to take it.”

Yumi leaned against the door of the room and smirked before walking out. “Come on. Try and get some festivity to things.”

“Did Phase agree to it?”  If he shot her down she’d have an alley in arguing her down.

“Sure did. He’s dressed up too.” She said proud of the fact that she had worn him down enough.  “Though knowing him he lamed it out.”

Walking into her room one half of the room was messy, clothes tossed about somewhere near the closet. The other half that was near the door was far more walkable. Someone had recently made the bed, which was a pleasant plus. She got out of her costume and was reduced to underwear. There was a chill in the room which she didn’t appreciate.

She went to the dresser and got out a black pair of jeans as well as a black long sleeved shirt. She couldn’t think of any sort of costume that would fit with the clothes.

She rummaged through the contents of the drawer wondering if she had a shirt that was somewhat creepy. Sadly all of the clothes they’d bought weren’t exactly meant for Halloween. Function over form.

“What’s taking so long?” Feint asked knocking on the door hard.

Reaching under the bed she grabbed a trunk with both hands and slid it out. Flipping it open she grabbed her ‘good’ phone and then her headset. Affixing it to her ear she worked with the band so that it was tight but also comfortable. It was a messy struggle. Throwing it against the bed she gathered her hair and then pulled it into a ponytail.

“No fucking way. How’d you get your hands on these?!”

Feint raised her head and smiled. Yumi was really excited for some reason.

“I found a friend who’s willing to help us out.” She knew that voice. Deciedly male that carried because of the natural tenor of his tone.

“Feint get out here! Phase got us a treat for Halloween!” Her voice was a bit muffled but still carried excitedly through the wall.

Standing and grunting from having been crouched, she walked out. The door opened and she was face to face with a masked man. He had on a black sleeveless shirt and jeans. She flinched backwards but took a second to actually look at him. His height, his recently cut hair, and slim build.

Reaching forward she gripped the edges of the mask and then pulled it off and Phase’s face was revealed to her. Dark eyes, flat nose, and wide grin. She rolled her eyes before hitting him lightly. “You startled me.”

“Sorry Feint. Didn’t think you startled that easily.”

She rolled her eyes then turned the mask over in her hands. It was just a simple blank white mask. Its front was smooth with two open spots for eyes and a curve of a nose. An elastic band wrapped around the back. “Alright, what’s with the mask?”

Once she looked down at it her eyes went wide. The mask on the front looked normal but on the back there was technology everywhere. Wires, tiny screens, headset pieces. The works. All held together in by a clear plastic shell.

“What is all this?” She asked and glanced back at Phase.

“This is a prototype of some tech from a potential friend of ours. Imagine a tablet on your face is what they told me.”

“A potential friend?” Yumi came into the room now, a mask in her hand. “I’m digging this friend.”

Feint shook her head. “Have we met them before? What makes you think we can trust them?”

Phase held up a hand. “I’ve talked to them a few times. They don’t know anything about us. At least nothing important. I’ve done a few jobs for them, small stuff on the side. This job we’re doing tonight is a mixture of testing these,” He held up one of the masks. “And to get parts to upgrade them out of beta.”

Feint was shaking her head. “I don’t like it.”

“Come on trust me.. Not like we couldn’t use some help in doing this stuff properly. Especially after the first few times.”

“Hey we were just getting the hang of it back then.” Yumi said defensively.

“Almost entirely because you’re reckless.” Feint added. The girls exchanged quick glares.

Phase raised his hands. “Relax. We had plans but terrible execution on all parts of it. But we got better. Thanks to this friend.”

Feint, who was still observing her mask glanced at him. “What do you mean?”

“They’ve helped walk through a few operations when I was working the trial period. Just trust their information and we’ll be okay.”

“Do we have a name for them then?” Yumi put her hands on her hips.

My name’s Darren.

Everyone started at the voice. They were the only ones in the room. Had their room been bugged? Were they exposed?

Feint raised her hand up and stared at the mask. “Yes, the voice came from the mask. No need for alarm.

Feint glanced at Phase, a sharp look, but he was smiling.

Yumi took the mask and put it on her face. “Hello?”

Hi Yumi. Nice to formally meet you.

“How do you know my name?”

Because I could hear you with the mask on. Tuned in because I figured you would be on the move by now.

Phase shrugged his shoulder. “We’re a slow moving bunch sometimes.”

“So who is this guy?” Yumi asked.

Not a guy. Nor a girl. Just Darren.

“Fine, just Darren.”

Feint sighed. “Don’t mind her. Nice to formally meet our new friend.” She stared pointedly at Phase.

Nice meeting you Feint.. Don’t miss deadlines and I’ll accept quirks. Hopefully they’re not as violent as you Phase.

“They usually aren’t.” Phase said as he looked at the girls. Both gave him strange looks and he shrugged his shoulders again. He went back outside for a moment to get the last mask and a jacket. He placed it on his face and glanced at them. “Now that we’re armed and ready, it’s time to go.”

“You sure?”

Phase turned to face Feint and she gave a curt nod. “Yeah. Let’s do this.”

Yumi came back into the room, showcasing her mask and Feint had to admit, it fit for them. She wondered what she looked like in the mask as well. Coming toward them she stretched her legs slightly and then her arms before motioning to Phase.

“Lead on then.”

Phase laughed lightly and started walking toward the living room. Opening the window wide he stepped onto the small balcony. They had the perfect view of the city. They could see the residential areas around them, from other complexes to houses. They then could go even deeper and see the shops and stores. Finally, the business in the distance from cooperate to commercial. That was where they wanted to go.

Phase put his hand to the mask and pressed the side. A microphone crackled to life and he spoke. “Testing, testing. Can you hear me?

Loud and clear Phase.” Yumi said as she came forward and flipped off the edge of the balcony.

Feint took a step forward before jumping forward as well. As she fell down the side of the building. She tapped the mask and the crackling of the communication line filled her ears over the air. In fact it blocked out most of the excess noise of the wind like a pair of great headphones. She rolled into a sprint and let the momentum pull her forward.

Taking several giant steps until she was at the edge of a rooftop, she jumped. A high leap that her got to a higher building. She landed lightly as she glanced back. Yumi and Phase were behind her. “Can you hear me?”

Phase’s voice came as if he was standing beside her. “Loud and clear.

She slowed down and turned around to see if he was nearby. “Where are you?

A few buildings away.” He said and the wind was blocked in his ears too.

The communication systems in your mask are top of the line. Much better than what you’ve been working with up until this point. Consider them a show of good faith from me to you.” Daren said with a chuckle. “Now I recommend you stop for a second. The first time you see this will be disorienting.

She frowned but did as they said and stood, her arms folded. Suddenly her right eye had a translucent map on it. She took a step back trying to focus on it. She saw the tiny blip that she assumed was her own. Her blip was blue and there were two other green ones nearby. Those she assumed were Yumi and Phase. Finally the red one in the distance was most likely the goal.

What is this thing?” Yumi asked and narrowed her eyes. She jumped forward and landed sloppily, keeping an eye on the map and watching herself move across it.

It’s a map. It gets a bit more in depth once you’re inside the factory.” Darren told them.

Why do we need this map?” Yumi asked as she took a quick turn and slid down the side of a building. She grabbed onto a windowsill then slid down further until she was almost at street level.

So we don’t have to keep winging it.” Feint concluded as she peaked out from around the corner to stare at the factory. “How do we want to approach this one?

I’m going to hack the surveillance system.” Darren said and she could hear fingers on a keyboard.“Computers are my specialty.

Mine too,” Feint said cautiously.

Good. Then you should be able to take out the on site camera’s personally.

I’ll take care of the alarms.” Phase folded his arms from his perch on a gargoyle. It was a gothic piece and gave a good viewpoint. Batman eat your heart out.

He stared down at the facility and narrowed his eyes. It was a large box of a place. At least three floors to it. A ramp on the side for shipping trucks was empty and the front parking lot was mostly empty. Using the mask was something that he wasn’t a complete stranger to. Darren had him test it a few times in alpha. Which meant using the voice commands. “Ok mask. Let’s see these vision settings. X-ray sounds pretty good.”

The map on the right eye remained but the left eye changed. He took a step back and then smirked. The walls were there but he could see the black of the emptiness of space all along the factory. Anything solid was white. Not perfect X-ray but pretty good. There were splotches of grey and white moving about on every floor. He figured those were the guards.

Found you.” He looked at the stationary guard with a big rectangle nearby. Computer consoles. He focused in on the lines of power that went around the entirety of the building. The one that went to the basement had his attention the most.

Jumping forward he would have flipped into the wall of the building and decided to show off his namesake. He fizzled in the air and passed through it harmlessly. Landing on his hands and feet he scoped out the area. It was stark white, with a fridge, table and microwave setup. Must have been the break room.

He looked around but couldn’t find that guard on rotation. But he could now see the power lines through the walls. He followed them and they traveled directly downward from where he was. He concentrated, fizzled quickly and sank down. He dropped three floors before hit solid ground.

Shaking slightly as he took a moment to regain his bearings. “Ok Mask. Normal vision if you will.”

The x-ray vision as well as the map faded away. He glanced around and confirmed that he was in a basement. There wasn’t much light and it smelt like damp. It was cool around and thankfully he dressed for the occasion. “This is really where they keep all their security wiring. This place is asking to get water damaged.

Walking toward the box, he saw the wires that converged to it . He grabbed the handle of the box’s door and forcibly yanked it off. He pulled the door off its hinge and saw lots of switches and poorly written labels. He wondered what it took to actually get to this room. Hopefully more security then just a few locked doors.

Darren can you see what I’m seeing?” Phase asked into the mic.

Crystal clear.

Good. Which of these is the alarm or should I knock them all out.”

Yeah I wouldn’t recommend that. Take out the third from the top.

Start at the top and go three down?”

Go for it.

And flip the switch?

No powers needed.

Following the instructions Phase flipped the switch and there wasn’t even a sound. Nothing to show that it worked. He looked around and arched his eyebrow. “I think we’re done here? Feint. Yumi. Your turn.

Already in position.” Yumi said and she sounded ecstatic. She was running across the roof of a nearby deli. “Hope you’ve got my back Feint.

Just don’t miss your mark.

Once she hit the edge Yumi jumped forward and braced her arms in front of her face. Before she hit the window, Feint was already going to work. Feint climbed up the walls of the factory. She shoved her hand through window and made a small arm sized hole. She reached around and unlocked it from the inside. She then proceeded to pull it open and slip through. On even footing she ducked low as Yumi flew through the now open window.

Yumi reached out and grabbed a hanging light and swung forward. Using her momentum and swinging her legs out she turned around before letting go.  With another flip she landed on all fours on the factory floor. “And we’re in. So uh… Darren? What am I looking for while I’m here?

That is my name. And you’re looking for a microchip of sorts. It’s for your mask however if you find any extras go ahead and take them. I have good contacts that we can sell those too.

Feint nodded, having listened in on the conversation and started walking around. The factory floor was mostly empty though it was obvious where machines did the work and where the human element came into play. However, she didn’t know what she was looking for exactly this time.

The mask was a piece of work though. It could zoom in better than the camera on any phone she’d use. The call clarity was some of the best she had heard. And there were applications that she’d yet to figure out how to use or even what they were. She’d have to play around with this to really see its possibilities.

Any guards around us?” Feint asked her gaze on the shelves of crates

No one nearby. There are a few guards but nothing too serious. Just don’t kill anyone.” Darren informed them.

Don’t worry. We don’t do that. Isn’t that right Phase..” Yumi said pointedly.

Shut up. I’ve been good about that.

Uh huh.” She was on the other side of the factory. Not as much machinery but lots of storage. Crates catalogued and stacked high up, neat and orderly on shelves high up.

“Let’s see if I can make this work. Alright Mask. All those crates, labels, information, doesn’t matter. Give it to me.

Almost like magic the mask started to zoom in on the small labels. It focused in on the things like serial numbers and started pulling up information like content descriptions, measurements, so on and so forth. Standing hands on her hips she waited. The mask was magic and she was wondering how they made it through without them.  Soon she had dozens of highlighted crates to choose from.

She yawned for a moment getting bored when it whirred to life. A red circle appeared over one of the crates. “Found it team. I’m going in.” Running toward the wall she spotted a fork lift. “Hey think you can,

Already on it.” Darren’s voice echoed through the mask.

The forklift whirred to life as it began to raise its prongs. Yumi started and jumped, her foot touching the lift as it reached the peak. Turning she jumped again, grabbed hold of the shelves. and climbed. Hopping across she grunted once more then dropped down and flipped on top of the crate.

She split open the top and started digging through the packaging. “There’s a lot of tech mumbo jumbo in here, Wiz Kid. What do you need?

All of it preferred. And Wiz Kid? Really.

All of it is, Wiz Kid. Feint get over here.

Feint heard the exchange and rolled her eyes at her partner. No worries of tilting it and breaking anything on the way up. Walking to the edge of the shelf she looked up toward the masked woman. “Toss them down.

Reaching into the box she took out plastic bags filled with electronic parts. They were green with weird wirings and nodes that she didn’t understand. All she knew that it went into computers and it made them do cool stuff. When it came to computer stuff she left that to Feint. Leaning forward and balancing on the shelf she dropped them down.

Feint snatched them out of the air one at a time and help them gingerly in her arms. Sensitive material. She was able to take two dozen before she had to call it. Wandering around the factory she’d found a bag to carry them in.

Yumi stopped as she held up another one and then nodded.  “Wiz Kid we got about a couple dozen of them. Is that enough?

It should be. That’s a good haul overall.”

As she quickly stepped forward she could just barely hear the sound of a siren in the distance. Then again ,they lived in the city, so sirens were the norm.

Phase. You still down there.” Darren asked suddenly.

Yeah.” Phase said as he leaned against the wall. He was using the right eye of the mask to flip through YouTube videos.

And the switch is still flipped?

Phase turned his head and the camera zoomed in onto the switchboard. The switches hadn’t moved since he last touched them. “You can see what I’m seeing. Why? What’s wrong?

The switch is flipped but the system must have rebooted. Or something else. Regardless an alarm has been tripped. The police are on their way. Get out now.

Everyone started at that and stood to attention. “Yumi check outside. I’ve got this.” Feint said as she turned and ran across the grounds to check toward the entrances. “Phase get up here.

Already ahead of you.” A hand shot through the ground, fizzling in before turning slightly solid. With a grunt Phase pulled himself through the floor. Going toward the door and peeking out he could see the multitude of flashing lights in the distance.

Shit. How’d this happen?

No idea.” Feint let out a breath. “We need to come up with a plan.”

The best idea I can think of is a distraction. The important thing is the technology.” Darren said through their headset.

And what? Let someone get caught? No way.” Phase said instantly.

Feint let out a breath, frustration showing. “I’m trying to find an escape route but there’s a healthy number of squad cars coming.

Leave it to me guys. Wiz Kid find a way out for them.” Yumi ran from her shelf and went forward. With one jump she grabbed ahold of a hanging light. Swinging forward she jumped from one light to another until she was at the open window. Hanging on the ledge she saw two of the cars skid to a stop. Not good.

Leaning forward for a second, she teetered on the edge before jumping outside. With a flip she landed hard on top of one of the cars. The cops inside were startled and she laughed and gave a wave to them. Turning quickly, she jumped forward and on top of the other car.

Two of the boys in blue got out of their cars and glared at her. “Put your hands in the air!” They drew their guns and aimed them at her, which wasn’t fair. She hadn’t even done anything wrong yet. Well other than landing on top of their cars. Maybe that was a little not cool.

Raising her hands up she rolled her eyes, “Can’t we all be cool? You guys already have a bad reputation as is.

Want some help with the distraction?” Darren’s filtered voice asked and Yumi smirked.

What’d you have in mind?”

Just be ready. You’ll know the signal,” they said simply and there was the sound of the fingers moving like the wind.

Suddenly and without warning the cars sprang to life. Wind shield wipers going, lights flickering, sirens blaring. At the same time both the cops made a sound of pain and their hands went to their chest. There was a slight crackle and she watched them throw off their radios.

She moved then and lunged at one of them. Kicking the gun from her hand Yumi shoved her down with a swift blow to her knee. Turning to the other she reached for his wrist. It snapped like a twig, getting a shout of shock and pain from the man. Going low suddenly the officer was on the ground, legs swept into the air.

One of the officers in the other car got out, his radio turned on and pushed up to his mouth. “We’ve got two officers down. Suspect on the move Requesting back up now!”

Laughing Yumi started running into traffic. She jumped onto the hood of a taxi and then jumped again to land on a traffic light post. “Alright Mask. Pull up the map. Tell me where my team is.”

The map appeared over her right eye and she saw her own blue dot. However a pair of green dots were leaving the factory. They weren’t far from her at the moment but they were moving at a decent speed.

They’re out. Now to make my exit.”

Glancing back, she could see people in blue shoving civilians out of the way and shouting orders. They were giving chase.

Turning around she jumped forward and landed onto rooftop of a drugstore. Sliding off the edge of it she darted around into an alley. Digging her hand into the wall she started climbing until she got to the top of the nearby apartment.

Rolling over the edge, she sat on the edge and kicked her feet slowly. She looked behind her and then tapped the mask. She could see squad cars racing down the streets trying to find her. She was tempted to taunt them but she knew that Phase wouldn’t approve of that so she stayed put.

Where you guys at?” She asked into the mic trying not to laugh too much.

We’re heading back towards the house.

I’ll meet you there.

Standing up quickly she stretched her legs and broke into run. She knew the way like the back of her hand. It was actually a shorter distance back then to get to the factory. She landed on the balcony and they were there waiting for her

So we can call that one a success right?

Phase pulled off his mask and ran his fingers across his forehead. It had gotten a little hot underneath the mask. “A little hiccup in the middle but yeah, a success. Didn’t have too many problems keeping their attention, did you?”

Yumi pushed the mask up her forehead and laughed. “Nah. My specialty is entertaining the crowd.” She waved before bowing to them both and laughed.

Feint clapped twice and shook her head. “On the upside, we got the tech.” She said and then spoke toward the mask. “How do we get this to you Darren?”

Phase knows the place. I’ll be there to pick it up within the week. Enjoy your night.” they said and then there was silence.

“So now that that’s taken care of what do you guys want to do?” Phase asked.

“Food. I think food would be good.” Feint said sliding her mask off. They walked into the living room and Yumi instantly went to the couch and turned on the TV. She flipped through the channels then settled on the news because fuck it at this point.

“And in local news yet another attack has been done by the infamous thieves that have plagued the city over the past few months. The Chicago police have been chasing several leads but nothing has come of it. As things stand the unnamed group still remains at large.”

“Here that guys? We’re on the news. Again!” Yumi said and threw her hands in the air very satisfied by the entire situation. “Want me to turn it up?”

“Go ahead.” Phase said and leaned against the back of the couch. “I want to hear what they say about us.”

Yumi did just that as the cut to the police chief. “These so called thieves seem to have a penchant for going after technology. They have been known to go after museums but rarely. What they plan to do with these pieces is unknown. We believe them to be a part of a much greater whole. We urge the public to remain on alert and continue to report any suspicious behavior to the police immediately. They are very dangerous.”

“Hear that. ‘We’re apart of some bigger whole.’” Yumi said wiggling her fingers. “We work on our own. Well until now.”

“How did you and Darren find each other?” Feint asked. She turned around and folded her arms, resting her chin on her hands.

“They contacted me after that bank job. I think that was the first time that we actually got in the news. They text, me saying that they liked our work and said they wanted to help us get more money. I didn’t trust them at first so I went on a trial mission. Remember when we got the money to fix the kitchen after Yumi almost burned it down? It was from that.”

“Look I know better than to try and cook now. You don’t have to keep reminding me of that.” She said.  “My bad.”

“Guys. Look at this.” Feint said and she was pointing toward the TV. The news story had changed.

“…an increasing wave of incidents involving the new street drug called Enhance. The crimes have been increasing in occurrence as well as violent. Rising from petty theft to assault and even murder. I must warn you that some of these images are graphic.”

The news reporter cut away to a series of images. Most of them showing boxes of pills. It when cut toward hospitalized people. Some heavily bandaged, other bruised and bloodied. There was even one in a full body cast.

“Enhance is a dangerous street drug. It is the known cause of over a dozen deaths in this week alone. Only a third of the deaths have come from over dosing on the drug while the others come from the manic behavior of the users. We recommend that you keep watch over your neighborhoods as well as your children. If you see any unsavory characters notify your local police immediately.”

Feint looked at her companions and frowned. “Have you guys heard about Enhance before?”

“It’s news to me.” Yumi put her hands behind her head. “Sounds metal as shit.”

“Maybe we should look into it.” Feint said and reached into her pocket. She pulled out her phone and walked toward the loveseat. Sitting down and folding her legs she unlocked it and opened up the web browser.

Phase walked past her and took the phone from her hands and wagged his finger.

“Hey, give that back.” She wanted to jump to her feet but her body didn’t react well enough.

“Worry about Enhance tomorrow. Relax.” He said and glanced over at Yumi who looked like she was already nodding off. “I’m going to cook something for us. Nothing fancy but enough to get us to sleep.”

“Love a man who cooks.” Yumi mumbled from the couch. She had switched positions to lay down sideways.

“Thanks Phase.” Feint said realizing just how tired she actually was. Phase walked off and smiled lightly, opening the fridge. It had been a good Halloween. No arguing that.
